If you asked me about the best memories from my childhood, almost every one of them would put us around a dinner table.
My mom’s side of the family is Italian, and my great-grandparents came to New York through Ellis Island. Growing up, Sunday dinner was just what we did. My parents, my grandparents, my aunts and uncles, all of us crowded around the table for my grandma Connie’s sauce. On Christmas Eve it was the feast of the seven fishes, a tradition my family keeps to this day.
When I was in high school, I asked my grandma to walk me through how she made that Sunday sauce, and I wrote it all down on a recipe card. I still have it. It’s one of the most valuable things I own, and it cost me nothing but an afternoon in her kitchen.
I built Our Table Traditions because every family has recipes like that one, and most of them never get written down. This is a place to keep those recipes, and the voices of the people who make them. Somewhere they’ll stay, for whoever comes looking.
